The centrepiece of this concert was Schumann’s riotously imaginative work, Carnaval. Its 21 short movements vividly depict a colourful cast of masked partygoers, including characters from Italian street theatre, Schumann’s then fiancée, his future wife Clara and the composer himself.
William Hancox used the big screen both to talk us through the piece and to illustrate his performance, and we were delighted to have commissioned original drawings from the talented young local artist Alma Lachman to add another creative strand to the concert.
The programme also included two evergreen keyboard favourites, Bach’s Italian Concerto and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.
The audience enjoyed the recital in the comfort and unique atmosphere of the Hailsham Pavilion.
